Bay Area-based Indian vocalist and recipient of a National Film Award from the President of India, Mahesh Kale, along with an elaborate ensemble of stellar instrumentalists from India, will take us on the musical adventure that has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide.
Endearingly called the “unlikely rock star,” Mahesh Kale has captivated audiences of all ages with his soulful performances that reflect an earnest reverence for the purity of the Indian classical music tradition while embracing experimentation, technology, and youthfulness. After performances around the world, this program is being presented for the first time in the Bay Area, Kale’s home, and is his first hometown feature concert since receiving the prestigious National Award.
While maintaining a rigorous concert schedule, pursuing collaborations and other creative endeavors, and creating an international footprint for his music, Mahesh Kale has also been teaching Indian classical music in the Bay Area since 2005, and currently serves as an inspiration to an active and motivated student body of over 200. The Stanford Jazz Festival recently referred to him as a “worldwide phenomenon, beloved for his enchanting, reverberant voice and his unique ability to interweave classical and popular music.”
Mahesh Kale will be accompanied for this concert by a group of exceptional instrumentalists from India, each one of whom has accompanied leading Indian musicians. The ensemble includes tabla players Vinayak Joshi and Vibhav Khandolkar, harmonium player Rajiv Tambe, violinist and sitarist Kedar Gulavani, and percussionist Suryakant Surve.
We really hope you can make it to the concert on 9/16! And if you haven't yet experienced Mahesh's voice - you are in for a treat! Get ready for a soul-stirring musical experience that is at once classical and popular, and certainly like no other! Come on, Bay Area, let’s experience the magic that people have been raving about, and let’s celebrate one of our very own!
