Ritz Theater and Performing Arts Center
1148 East Jersey St., Elizabeth, NJ 07201
Venue Type: Auditorium
The theatre opened for its first show on March 9, 1926 with 2,791 seats. The theatre was a cultural landmark through the 1960's when entered a period of decline. By 1980 it was threatened to be demolished in order to build a parking lot. Rescued by philanthropists who set out to restore the theatre. They ran out of money in 1989.
In 1994 it was purchased by George Castro, who has restored it to its 1920's grandeur and used it as a performing arts center.
In 2014 it was purchased by the current owners who have a track record for successfully reviving performing arts theatres in several other locations up and down the U.S. Eastern seaboard. The new ownership has continued the renovations to install new heating and cooling systems and more. The old opera house has been reborn as New Jersey’s newest theatre and performing arts center.
The Ritz Theatre is now a fully-equipped, state of the art, multi-purpose performing arts center which will feature concerts, comedy, theatrical performances, speakers, opera, dance recitals, children’s and family shows, movies, sports, presentations and other special events. The Theatre will also be used for corporate, civic, and local events, which will include meetings, conferences, weddings, stage competitions and fundraisers.
